As artist, director, choreographer and performer, Fangas Nayaw’s versatile practices probe into the dynamics of audience participation and the possibilities of new technology in the performing arts, while constantly reflecting on his indigenous identity and cultural tradition.
For Cosmopolis #2, Fangas Nayaw proposes a series of site-specific events reflecting on the cultural practices and social interactions of the indigenous peoples in Taiwan. Visitors are invited to participate in traditional songs and dances in various forms of workshops, lectures and participatory performances, as well as to engage in personal exchanges with the performers.
The project creates a social context within the exhibition space, where the artists forge diverse forms of exchange to trigger new perceptions of the indigenous identity – highlighting and performing its tension and fluidity. “Masingkiay”, which means “somewhat crazy/insane” in the Amis language, is a condition (such as under the influence of alcohol), a personal response, a communal strategy and perhaps a spark of possibility.
